LEMON GROVE (CNS) - A man claimed his cellphone was a gun and pointed it a sheriff's deputy in Lemon Grove, prompting a three-shot barrage that missed, sheriff's officials said.
The deputy was called out around 10:15 p.m. Friday to the vicinity of Palm Street east of Skyline Drive because someone had reportedly taken a large amount of unknown pills, said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Greg Hampton.
The deputy spotted a man who matched the suspect's description -- later identified as Raymond Douville -- near the residence where the call originated
The man tried to hide behind a parked car, Hampton said.
The deputy told him to show his hands, but Douville allegedly held a black object in his hands and told the deputy he had a gun. He then stood up and took a shooting stance, prompting the deputy to fire three rounds with his gun, Hampton said.
No one was hit, Hampton said.
He then held out his hand and told the deputy he had a cellular phone. The deputy spotted the lighted keypad and holstered his weapon, Hampton said.
However, Douville started to walk toward the deputy and continued after he was ordered to stop and get on the ground, which prompted the deputy to pull his Taser and zap him, Hampton said.
Douville was then taken into custody. He was taken to Grossmont Hospital to be treated for chest pain.
Hampton said he would be held under medical guard until he was medically cleared to be booked into jail.
The three rounds the deputy fired were recovered and no one was injured in the shooting, Hampton said.
