LA JOLLA SHORES (CNS) - A diver who lost consciousness in shallow water off La Jolla Shores later died at an area hospital, a city lifeguard said Sunday.
The diver's time of death was not immediately known. His name will be released pending notification of next of kin, said San Diego City Lifeguard Lt., Greg Buchanan.
Buchanan said lifeguards were notified of the incident near Spindrift Drive at la Jolla Shores at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
"Two divers were completing a short dive in fairly shallow water when one of them was pinned up against a sea wall by the elements," San Diego City Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said.
"He was unable to extract himself," Lerma said "The other diver attempted to help him, but (the victim) seemed to be unconscious."
He said lifeguards nearby were alerted and several were sent up the beach and via a small rescue boat to assist the diver.
"The diver was brought in to shore by lifeguards," Lerma said. "He was not breathing. CPR was administered."
Paramedics rushed the diver to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said the incident happened at 12:51 p.m. near Spindrift Drive in La Jolla Shores.
"Two divers were completing a short dive in fairly shallow water when one of them was pinned up against a sea wall by the elements," Lerma said. "He was unable to extract himself. The other diver attempted to help him, but (the victim) seemed to be unconscious."
Lerma said lifeguards nearby were alerted and several were sent up the beach and via a small rescue boat to assist the diver.
"The diver was brought in to shore by lifeguards," Lerma said. "He was not breathing. CPR was administered."
Lerma said the diver was transported by ambulance to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment.
