SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8/CNS) — A downtown San Diego high-rise condo complex was evacuated early Sunday morning due to a water pipe bursting.
Residents of the 14-story Diamond Terrace Condominiums located in the 400 block of Ninth Avenue were forced to leave after a pipe leading to the building’s water heater burst shortly before 5 a.m.
The entire building in Downtown's East Village was reportedly flooded because of the pipe bursting.
San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Monica Munoz said a San Diego County Health Department and a building engineer were notified, while San Diego Gas & Electric checked for electrical hazards.
More than 100 units were evacuated with all tenants needing to find a place to stay Sunday night, if not longer.
A couple of nearby businesses were also affected and forced to closed.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist but it appeared most of the evacuees will stay with family or get hotel rooms.
As of midday Sunday, there was no word when residents would be able to return home.
No injuries were reported.
