Driver jumps median and slams into oncoming traffic

A man visiting San Diego from overseas was killed after driving into oncoming traffic on a busy Encinitas road on Thursday night.

ENCINITAS (CBS 8/CNS) - A man visiting San Diego from overseas was killed after driving into oncoming traffic on a busy Encinitas road on Thursday night.

The collision involving a pickup truck and two cars occurred at Leucadia Boulevard and Garden View Road just before 7 p.m., said Lt. Clayton Lisk of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Acquaintances of the crash victim told News 8 that the 23-year-old man was visiting from Portugal to study at a golf academy in Carlsbad, and had only been in the United States for a few weeks.

Two fellow classmates were riding in a car behind the victim. They say he veered into oncoming traffic as he drove around a curve, jumped the median, and was hit by two trucks in the opposite lanes.

One of the injured people was flown to a hospital by helicopter and the other was taken to a hospital by an ambulance, Lisk said.

The fatally injured driver was declared dead at the scene, according to Lisk.

Authorities say they're not sure why the man lost control. Toxicology tests are underway, but investigators don't believe alcohol was a factor.
