Trying Dry or Damp January? A new app can help

Most people have heard of "Dry January," but have you heard of "Damp January"? CBS 8 talked to San Diegans who are participating.

SAN DIEGO — Many San Diegans, like Jeff Schwarz, are participating in "Dry January," challenging themselves to abstain from alcohol for the entire month. But have you heard of "Damp January"?

Whether you're participating in either, a new app can help locate places with nonalcoholic options.

"Get me not drunk!" Schwarz cheered.

"I'm glad the trend is catching on," Schwarz said. "I'm doing it as a New Year's resolution and making healthier choices. Replacing alcohol with the gym and yoga."

Even the bartender at Breakpoint PB is taking on the challenge.

"It's hard, it's really hard because I have to try all my drinks and now I can't," laughed Breakpoint PB's bartender, Tiffany Garges.

'Damp January'

Others, like San Diegan Jessica Blackburn, opt for Damp January.

"Damp January is mindful drinking," said Blackburn. "You are still drinking some, but focusing on drinking less. I think it's more realistic than to cut cold turkey."

As we reach the midpoint of the month, CBS 8 asked people how they're faring with their resolutions.

"I accidentally had one sip of beer when I wasn’t looking, but that didn’t break me. Well, I’d rather be honest!" laughed Schwarz.

"It's good! Any time I go out with dinner and friends, I think, 'do I actually need wine tonight or do I save it for another day?'" laughed Blackburn.

"I would for sure encourage others because you feel so much better. I wasn’t expecting that waking up would be so much easier. Going to sleep is better and it's crazy. It's only been two  weeks and I think I'm going longer than February," said Garges.

Dry Spot App can help with goals

Now, there’s a new app that can help you stick to your goals.

Marisa Serrano created the Dry Spot App. It lists the locations of local bars, restaurants and venues offering nonalcoholic beverages.

"It is free to download. Right now, it is in the iOS store. You can download and it's free to use, free to list, free to be listed, and any business that wants to be listed can. I want people who want to go out with their friends to be included. I want them to feel included, not excluded," said Serrano.

Breakpoint PB is just one of the many locations on the app that offers an array of mocktails and tasty nonalcoholic drinks.

"I have friends who do Dry January and Damp January," said Schwarz. "Even if you slip off and have one drink, don’t hop off the wagon, you can hop back on and you'll still feel better."
