Graduation ceremony for new members of SDPD RSVP program

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego Police Department's Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol welcomed and congratulated 18 new members Wednesday.

Police Chief William Lansdowne and Mayor Bob Filner were on hand for the graduation ceremony in Balboa Park.

The 20-year-old program currently has about 375 retirement-age volunteers who assist officers with traffic control, crime prevention education, vacation house checks and welfare visits.

The mayor thanked them for their service.

"The police will be the first to say that we have to have a supportive community and you are the spear of that sword in terms of community support," Filner said.

Interested seniors who are retired or work part-time, are in good health and have a valid California driver's license are encouraged to apply.
