PHOENIX (AP) — A new report says more people killed themselves or attempted to commit suicide in Grand Canyon National Park from 2003 to 2009 than all but one other national park.
According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11 people killed themselves and 10 tried to at the northern Arizona park during that period.
Only Blue Ridge Parkway National Park in North Carolina and Virginia had a higher number of suicides at 15. Another 6 people made attempts.
The Arizona Republic says the people also have taken their lives in Lake Mead National Recreation Area (3 suicides, 4 attempts), Saguaro National Park (5 suicides, 1 attempts) and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (4 suicides, 1 attempt).
The CDC based its study on ranger-reported events. Any deaths investigated by law-enforcement agencies weren't included in the statistics.
