SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An exhibit on guitars is scheduled to open this morning at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.

"Guitar: The Instrument That Rocked the World" is a touring exhibition of the National Guitar Museum. The show is making its first West Coast stop in San Diego.

"The guitar is the most enduring icon in American history," said H.P. Newquist, founder and executive director of the guitar museum. "It has been around longer than baseball, basketball, soft drinks and sports cars. It's hard to find anyone who hasn't been affected by the guitar, whether as players or as fans of music ranging from country and folk to jazz and rock."

The exhibit features more than 60 guitars and nearly 100 historical artifacts, the history of the instrument and the science of pitch and tone.

Displays also show the guitar's role as an agent of personal freedom, social change and expression, and the instrument's importance to music ranging from the protest movement to punk rock.

The exhibit runs through April 6. The science center opens daily at 10 a.m.
