Alzheimer’s San Diego offers support for families, caregivers

The organization has professional social workers manning their phones, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SAN DIEGO — If you or a loved one are facing Alzheimer’s disease, picking up the phone can make a big difference in your life.

Alzheimer’s San Diego has professional social workers manning their phones, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They understand the challenges individuals, families and caregivers face when dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.

Kristen Romea, the Director of Supportive Services at Alzheimer’s San Diego says they may not be able to solve all your problems in one phone call, but can direct you to proper resources available to you, including Medical, and help you come up with a plan.

They can also help you get involved with Alzheimer’s San Diego’s many engagement opportunities, including support groups, educational programs and social programs.

The programs serve individuals with Alzheimer’s, families and caregivers and are all 100% free and are offered at the organization’s offices in Kearny Mesa, at various locations around San Diego County, including libraries, and online.

It can be very hard for people to reach out when dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, there’s stigma and fear. Romea says that fear is understandable.

”You know, it's tough," Romea says. "This disease is an ugly one. It's a long one. Lasts a long time…. we all know that any one of us could at some point in our lives develop dementia, so it's easier to avoid it and not think about it than to interact with someone who's living with the disease.”

Alzheimer’s San Diego also helps people who are living alone, with Alzheimer’s disease, something that can be a daunting proposition. Romea says most older adults want to age in place, and the organization is there to support those living alone with dementia to do so in a safe manner.

Whatever the specific situation, if you or a loved one is living with Alzheimer’s disease, or some other kind of dementia, Alzheimer’s San Diego is waiting for your call. Anyone living in San Diego or caring for someone who lives in San Diego is welcome to call. You don’t need medical insurance and you don’t even need a diagnosis.

The number is (858) 492-4400, and it is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
