Governor Newsom expects to extend stay-at-home order in Southern California region

Monday's update comes on the heels of San Diego County recently reporting all-time highs for daily COVID-19 cases and the region at 0.0% ICU capacity.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, California — Governor Gavin Newsom provided an update Monday regarding the state of California's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Governor's update was from his home due to Sunday's announcement that Newsom will enter a 10-day quarantine out of an abundance of caution despite testing negative for COVID-19 after a staff member he had been in contact with tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, a spokesperson for the governor’s office confirmed.

Monday's update comes on the heels of San Diego County recently reporting all-time highs for daily COVID-19 cases. The top four highest daily cases have all occurred in the past week, with Wednesday's 2,807 cases, Thursday's 2,604, Friday's 3,611 and Saturday's 3,493.

Governor Newsom gave an update on ICU capacity by region. Both the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions are both at 0.0% available ICU capacity.  "Based upon all the data and trendlines it's very likely that we will need to extend that stay-at-home order in the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions," Gov. Newsom said.
