MTS will add sanitizing stations at transit centers amid coronavirus concerns

Spokesperson said they clean all buses and trolleys daily. Some are cleaned twice.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — The Metropolitan Transit System wants the public to know crews clean their buses and trolleys daily with products recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

"Whether it's handrails or the back of seats, the seats themselves, the floors, we're coming through and cleaning these buses and trolleys top to bottom," said MTS spokesperson Mark Olson.

He said all 800 buses and 130 trolleys in their fleet are cleaned thoroughly.

Olson told News 8 cleaning solutions were upgraded a couple of years ago during the Hepatitis A outbreak. He said they’ve been using the same ones ever since.

MTS is working with the San Diego County health department to add hand sanitizing stations at transit centers throughout the area.

Sstarting Friday, March 13, MTS will begin staffing four of the busiest transit centers with cleaning crews each weekday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to further disinfect station surfaces, as well as Trolley doors and door buttons when they stop at the station.

Those teams will be located at the San Ysidro, 12th & Imperial, Old Town and El Cajon stations.

Fifty-four handwashing stations will be in addition to the rigorous cleaning standards that MTS has had in practice for more than two years.

All bus and Trolley vehicles are disinfected daily, with solution recommended by the CDC. Trolley stations are also wiped down daily, with deep cleanings once or twice a week.

The handwashing stations will begin being delivered the morning of Friday, March 13 between 7:30 and 8 a.m. at the El Cajon Transit Center.

They will be placed at all stations throughout the day.
