San Diego Catholic Diocese monitors coronavirus

The preventative measures that are in place will impact the church community.

SAN DIEGO — The deadly coronavirus outbreak continues to scare the public, and the San Diego Catholic Diocese is concerned. The preventative measures that are in place will impact the church community.

“What we know is a little over 100 deaths have occurred worldwide from coronavirus. The statistics show about 35,000 to 40,000 of Americans die every year from the flu,” said Dr. Jyotu Sandhu, family and sports medicine at Sharp Rees-Stealy.

Dr. Jyotu Sandhu responded to the community’s concern of the virus and said anytime you’re at large gatherings, whether it’s a Super Bowl Party or church, you are at risk.

Based on the risk of exposure, the San Diego Catholic Diocese will adopt any measures to protect its parishes and members.

“Such as temporarily suspending holy communion by cup, or asking the sign of the peace temporarily suspended,” said Aida Bustos, San Diego Catholic Diocese.

The diocese is working closely with public health officials to monitor the coronavirus case.

“So far what they said is the risk to the public is very low unless someone has traveled to the affected areas or has come in contact with someone who has,” said Aida Bustos.

Even though there isn’t an outbreak locally, precautions will be in place as a reminder to limit the spread of the flu.

“We hope that some of the preventative measures people take with the coronavirus filters into the flu as well,” said Dr. Sandhu.

Dr. Sandhu said, avoid sick people and keep your distance, wash your hands and stay home if you’re sick. He adds, if you’re out watching the game, no double-dipping because you never know who is sick.

“Although there is a scare with coronavirus, influenza is by far statistically more dangerous,” said Dr. Sandhu.

As we’re monitoring the coronavirus, Doctor Sandhu said the flu season is twice as bad this year than last year. He suggests you talk to your doctor about flu prevention.
