High-speed chase turns into manhunt in North Park

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An auto theft suspect who refused to yield to the California Highway Patrol on Interstate 15 in the Kensington area Tuesday led officers on a meandering, high-speed road chase before crashing the stolen sport utility vehicle he was driving and making a futile attempt to evade arrest on foot.

The driver sped off when a CHP officer tried to pull him over near Adams Avenue about 1 p.m., according to the state agency. The suspect continued to the north into Mission Valley, fleeing over eastbound and westbound Interstate 8 for a time before managing to lose the pursuing officers.

A short time later, the Highway Patrol got reports that a motorist in a black SUV matching the description of the stolen Chevrolet Tahoe was involved in a hit-and-run crash on the southbound I-805 offramp to University Avenue, the CHP reported.

Officers found the damaged vehicle abandoned in the 3100 block of Bancroft Street in North Park and began searching the area, advising residents to stay inside their homes with their doors and windows locked until the suspect could be located.

About 2 p.m., officers found the man hiding under a parked car in the 3200 block of 32nd Street and arrested him without further incident, according to the CHP. The suspect's name was not immediately available.
