ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - The search continues Sunday for a driver who took off after a deadly freeway crash in the North County.
One man was killed in a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles. It happened at about 3 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, near Encinitas Boulevard.
The CHP says a 22-year-old driver from Chula Vista rolled his 2014 Acura ILX, and came to a stop in the middle of the road.
Just moments later, a Toyota Tacoma hit him, and the driver of that truck got out and took off running.
"We have pretty good witnesses that were able to give a good description of that driver," CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
The hit-and-run driver was described as white, around 33 years old, 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds, and bald with a mustache and tattoos.
Bettencourt said he may live in Murrieta or Anaheim.
A 30-year-old San Diego woman in a 2007 Mazda 3 sedan was also involved in the crash, although Bettencourt said it was unclear which vehicle she hit. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
The CHP is hoping more witnesses will come forward to help them figure out what caused the 22-year-old to crash in the first place.
"Let's get some answers for this individual's family - we owe it to them to find out exactly what happened," Bettencourt said.
The driver who fled is facing felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges, according to the CHP. They say it is possible if he would have remained at the scene, he may not have been charged.
It's unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in this crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oceanside division of the CHP.
