SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The family of an eight-year-old boy killed during the Parade of Lights say it's a tragedy they'll never forget.
New video has surfaced of the Coast Guard accident on San Diego Bay that killed an Anthony DeWeese.
News 8 obtained the home video Wednesday after it was played in open court during the court martial of the officer driving the boat.
Thirteen-year-old Megan Swanson was recording the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights December 20, 2009 with her dad David piloting the Seattle family's sailboat when her camera caught a Coast Guard patrol vessel buzzing by.
The home video shows the boat speeding near Harbor Island on its way to a stranded yacht call. Minutes later, the 33-foot-long Coast Guard vessel, piloted by Petty Officer Paul Ramos, plows into a 26-foot-long boat driven by Alan DeWeese filled with family and friends.
The video doesn't show the crash, but you can hear it. Within seconds, maritime radio traffic speaks volumes.
While his daughter continues to roll, David Swanson poses a question about the speeding Coast Guard boat.
"Why were these guys going 20 knots? It doesn't make any sense," David said.
The collision kills eight-year-old Anthony DeWeese. During the commotion, if you listen carefully, you can hear Anthony's mother Caroline calling out her son's name.
"You hear Caroline DeWeese crying out for her son saying 'Anthony! Anthony!' because everyone thought he'd been knocked overboard trying to locate him. it's very poignant and very sad," DeWeese family attorney Brig. Gen Mike Neil (Ret.) said.
Neil is an attorney who represents the DeWeese family and has seen the video.
"There was no emergency. No need to speed like that. The hull was up blindly going through a crowded bay with hundreds if not thousands of boats watching the Parade of Lights," Neil said.
Paul Ramos is facing involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide charges at his Northern California court martial.
