SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Surfrider Foundation announced Monday that hundreds of beach and ocean enthusiasts are expected to turn out next Sunday for its 20th annual "Paddle for Clean Water" at the Ocean Beach Pier.
The free event, themed "Honoring the Past, Engaging the Future," is designed to raise awareness about the pollution threats facing San Diego beaches, such as the sewage spill caused by last week's power outage, according to foundation spokesman Tommy Hough.
The family celebration of surfing culture and community will also promote the foundation's conservation programs, Hough said.
Chris Cantore is set to emcee the event, whose sponsors include radio station 91X and Clif Bar, Hough said. Special guests include Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, and Gary Sirota, one of the founders of Paddle for Clean Water.
The Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1984, is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans and beaches, Hough said. It has 90 chapters worldwide and more than 50,000 members.
