SAN DIEGO — Police arrested a man Wednesday morning for Sunday's fatal hit-and-run in Sherman Heights. Police say 28-year-old Christopher Nunez of City Heights is in custody as of Wednesday after they arrested Nunez on Timothy Drive. Police also recovered the driver's 2008 GMC Envoy and took it into evidence.
Nunez is accused of hitting and killing 41-year-old Jason Gordon.
"[It's] just about justice and closure for me and my girls," said Jason's widow, Katie on Wednesday.
Jason was the father of 14-month-old twin girls.
"They know he's not here," said Katie. "I'm just keeping his spirit alive and his love."
Police say they captured pictures of the Envoy from the city's Smart Streetlight cameras.
On Tuesday, the San Diego Police Department released photos of a male suspect believed to be the driver of an SUV that fled east on Market Street after hitting and killing 41-year-old Jason Gordon early Sunday morning. Then, police say they received several tips.
According to SDPD, after the hit-and-run, Nunez drove to Humberto’s Taco Shop at the corner of Broadway and 25th Street where he ordered food. As he drove away from the taco shop, he backed into a sedan.
"Investigators also obtained video security footage of the suspect inside a restaurant in the Sherman Heights community after the collision," said Sergeant Victoria Houseman of the San Diego Police Department.
Two women confronted the driver before he sped off.
Gordon was an operations manager at Tiffany's. When he returned home Saturday after work, he had dinner with his wife Katie before going out to a friend's birthday party.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, as he was heading home, Jason was hit by an SUV. The left headlight of the SUV was damaged and no longer working after the collision, according to police.
"People loved him and would want justice for him," said Katie.
Nunez is being held on $100,000 bail pending arraignment,
scheduled for Friday afternoon.
