SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – About 1,000 junior lifeguards from across San Diego County hit the beach for a competition Friday.
The guards participated in running, swimming and paddling competitions during the Junior Lifeguard Ocean Festival held at Mission Beach.
They've been training all summer for the contest and the kids said junior guards is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work.
“Toughest part is we do a lot of buoy swims and go outside the waves, but the funnest part is that we get to go snorkeling and like do some runs,” said Tate Kelly a 12-year-old junior lifeguard.
Entry fees from a junior guard invitational held this afternoon go to support water safety awareness and learn-to-swim programs.
