LA MESA (NEWS 8) - Firefighters extinguished a fire Thursday that engulfed a single-family residence in La Mesa.
The fire broke out at around 10:20 a.m. on Carbo Court, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue, which is located north of State Route 94 and east of Lemon Grove Avenue.
Firefighters discovered an attached garage fully involved with fire, extending into the main body of the house, according to public information officer Sonny Saghera.
Inside the house were six people, including three young children ages three, six and eight.
Karla Fierro was taking a shower when her boyfriend ran in with their daughter and told her to get out.
"He said 'get out of the house! Get of the house!' I thought he might have been kidding. I looked out and everything was black smoke," she said.
Karla and her family were able to make it out of the burning house, but a family friend who is disabled was trapped inside.
A neighbor who was outside doing yard work ran to help. He was able to drag Karla's friend by his arms from the burning building.
He was rushed to the hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation.
Karla said she is extremely grateful no one was seriously injured.
Her boyfriend was also treated for smoke inhalation.
No neighboring structures were affected however, there was significant smoke and heat damage throughout the residence, Saghera said.
Due to the heavy amount of fire, a second alarm was called to bring additional units, and the San Miguel Fire Department and the San Diego Fire Department assisted.
The fire was contained within 30 minutes. Two residents were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the structure and its contents. The cause is under investigation.
