SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Labor Day weekend beachgoers can expect big waves Saturday, but should watch out for dangerous rip currents, the National Weather Service advised.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for San Diego coastal areas noting waves between 4 and 8 feet high are to be expected through 9 p.m. Sunday. Southwest-facing beaches, such as Coronado and Tourmaline, may see sets as high as 11 feet.
The waves are due to a southwest swell that is expected to continue through Sunday evening, the advisory stated. Minor flooding at high tide may also occur.
Dangerous rip currents will also be found at area beaches but gradually will subside late in the weekend, the NWS advised. Lifeguards said the ocean temperature at Mission Beach was 65 degrees.
Holiday weekend highs along the coast were expected to be in the high 60s to low 70s, with low clouds and fog in the morning. Highs were expected to be in the high 70s to low 80s in the valleys, high 80s to low 90s near the foothills, 84 to 94 degrees throughout the weekend in the mountains.
Triple-digit highs were expected in the deserts all weekend, the Weather Service reported.
