SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – From bobcats to cougars – more and more San Diegans are reporting seeing big cats in their yards and neighborhoods.
News 8 has received several videos of the cats roaming through different areas in the county.
Chris Weixelman set up a trap to catch raccoons, but instead video footage captured three bobcats moving about his 4S Ranch backyard. “You hear about them in the area, mountain lions, bobcats, but it is not very often that you expect to see them in your backyard. When I first saw the video, I had to stop and really look at it. Bobcats have that distinct little curved short tail.”
In another case, Tommy Fairfax ring’s video captured another bobcat staring down his door and moving his tail before hopping over a fence down the hillside off Park Village Road in Rancho Penasquitos.
Wildlife biologist Roy Toft set up multiple cameras to catch the cats. “The cameras are right in this little draw – you see the riverbeds.”
On Wednesday, News 8 reported about a mountain lion mom with her cubs near Mt. Woodson Golf Course. “It makes sense that they are coming into the golf course. There is water. There are bunnies. Where there are bunnies there are coyotes,” said Toft.
Toft also said “the way you can tell Pumas apart are the markings on the whiskers and whisker pattern.” He also expressed his concern about big cats being trapped. Toft said he does not want the cougars to be trapped because he is afraid once they are and are relocated, they will be killed.
