CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Chula Vista Police Officers shot and killed a man during an altercation early Wednesday morning.

San Diego Police officials, the agency conducting the investigation, provided details to CBS 8 about the events that led to the shooting.

Around 1 a.m. Chula Vista dispatchers received a call that a white Volvo sedan crashed near the 700 block of H Street and Marina Parkway north of Sandpiper Way. Upon arriving, officers encountered the suspected driver, however, the man refused to exit the vehicle.

Soon after, police say that the man exited the car and flashed a firearm in the direction of the police officers. The officers then opened fire, hitting the man an unknown number of times.

The suspect was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the car is believed to be involved in a collision in a separate location.

They confirm the shooting was captured on police-issued body-worn cameras.

The driver has been identified as a Hispanic man in his 50s. The investigator confirmed the driver shot and killed is currently registered to the Volvo. DMV registration confirms, Moises Colunga Jr. is registered to the 2007 Volvo.

Police say the sergeant who fired his department-issued weapon is currently assigned to patrol.  He has been employed by the Chula Vista Police Department for approximately 23 years.
