EL CAJON, Calif. — A man was killed Sunday in a single-car accident in El Cajon, according to police. The report of the fatal crash came in around 1:45 p.m.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle when it hit a tree in the 1200 block of North Second Street near Greenfield Drive, according to the El Cajon Police Department. Heartland Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene where they found a black 1998 Ford Explorer with the deceased man inside.

According to a preliminary investigation and witness statements, police believe the driver was traveling northbound on North Second Street and drifted onto a raised center divider striking a tree.

Authorities said the identity of the driver in his mid-30s is known but is being withheld pending notification of family.

It was unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor. No other vehicles or persons were involved in the crash.

North and southbound lanes of North Second Street from Persimmon Avenue to Greenfield were closed following the accident but reopened just before 6 p.m., according to a tweet from police.
