SAN DIEGO — Merry Grinchmas! Although it felt more like summer than winter on Sunday in San Diego, the holidays are just around the corner. To start the season the 14th annual Grinch Christmas tree lighting was held in Balboa Park outside The Old Globe where performances of “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas” began last week.
Cast members from the show along with director James Vasquez and the Globe’s artistic director Barry Edelstein along with many San Diego families were there for the tree lighting. The switch to light the tree was flipped by the Grinch and Cindy-Lou Who.
Designed by Grinch scenic designer John Lee Beatty, the tree is located in the center of the Globe’s Copley Plaza and will remain lit throughout the run of the show.
This year marks the 22nd season of the holiday musical “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas” which plays through December 29.
The tree lighting is a free event and also included live performances by the Grinch cast.
