Teen in College Area wakes up to prowler in her bedroom

San Diego Police arrested a 22-year-old suspect after a chase through several yards.

SAN DIEGO — A 19-year-old woman in the College Area woke up around 4:45 Wednesday morning to a strange man in her bedroom. When she said something to the intruder, he ran outside. But instead of leaving the area, San Diego police say the man stayed on the property and was peeping through a window when they showed up.

“Within minutes, our officers arrived on scene, saw the suspect right outside the residence, and a foot pursuit ensued,” said Captain Alberto Leos. “The officer chased the individual for a short distance and the they were able to take him into custody without anyone getting injured.”

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Dillon Baldwin Acuna. He was arrested, charged with burglary, and is currently being held on $50,000 bail. Officers say at one point while trying to get away, Acuna fell in a swimming pool.

Despite the pursuit going through multiple backyards, several neighbors, including Sergio Morejon, say they had no idea the incident happened.

“Just don't feel as safe as one would like to in their home,” Morejon said after hearing the details. He says the neighborhood is filled with San Diego State students, many of them female. He shares a home with four women.

“Ya - if there's a guy hopping in the window over there - what's to stop him from hopping in the window over here?”

Police say they have not had any recent calls of a prowler in the area. That said, they are looking into whether this is an isolated incident or has been happening for a while.

“If anybody has any ring door cameras, any Nest cameras, please review them for the last couple of days just to see if you've had anyone wandering around your property,” Captain Leos asked.

Fortunately, no one was injured but police fear, with our current weather, we could see more of this so they're sending out this timely reminder. “We know it's hot.” Capt. Leos said. “It's going to continue to be hot for an unforeseen future. We just ask to please lock your homes up, right? Keep them locked up. Don't keep the doors unlocked. The screen doors open. Make sure you lock your residence at night when you go to sleep.”
