2-alarm fire at downtown senior living facility

One person was taken to a hospital and the Red Cross is assisting about 30 others after a fire broke out in a fifth floor unit.

SAN DIEGO — One person was taken to a hospital and as many as 30 people are being assisted by the Red Cross after a fire broke out Saturday afternoon in a fifth-floor unit of a senior living facility in downtown San Diego.

Units were dispatched at 2:15 p.m. and arrived a few minutes later to 525 14th St. at Potiker Family Senior Residence, a 200-unit home for low income seniors, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

San Diego Fire-Rescue reported on X, formerly Twitter, that a mattress caught fire in a fifth floor apartment. A battalion chief later said the fire was ignited by "smoking materials."

A total of 92 personnel were assigned to the fire, including three medics, four trucks and 13 engines, officials said.

One person was taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation. The Red Cross has been assigned to assist up to 30 people after water damaged units on lower floors.

The cities of Coronado and National City assisted in the effort.
