Artist behind iconic sculptures in Borrego Springs faces life-threatening health issue

Sculptor Ricardo Breceda has no insurance and needs major heart surgery to survive.

SAN DIEGO — Ricardo Breceda, the self-taught sculptor known for his breathtaking metal creations in Borrego Springs and beyond, is facing a life-threatening health crisis and urgently needs heart surgery.

Breceda collapsed earlier this month and spent nearly two weeks in the hospital. Tests revealed a severely blocked artery, putting the sculptor at risk of sudden death without immediate intervention.

"Right now I feel great, but the doctors told me if I don't take care of myself, I don't have the surgery they want, I could die at any time," Breceda said.

The artist, known for his generous spirit and infectious smile, finds himself in a difficult position. Without health insurance, he is turning to his art to fund the life-saving procedure. However, true to his character, he refuses to accept charity.

"No GoFundMe," Breceda insists. "People want to help, send me good wishes or come over and get one of my pieces... that would make me happy."

In response to his health crisis, Breceda is offering his sculptures for sale at significant discounts. Pieces range from small works priced at just a couple of dollars to larger sculptures available for $5,000 or more - a fraction of their usual cost.

For those unable to purchase art, Breceda emphasizes that support comes in many forms. The outpouring of well-wishes and calls of encouragement he's received since his hospitalization have touched him deeply.

"Money is important, but happiness is much better. Friends... it's much better than money," Breceda reflected, showcasing the positive outlook that has endeared him to so many.

As the community rallies around this beloved artist, Breceda's gallery on Highway 79 in Aguanga, just over the San Diego County line, remains open for those wishing to support him through art purchases or simply to send their good wishes in person. The gallery is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
