SAN DIEGO — Monica Munoz, Public Information Officer for San Diego Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed that longtime assistant fire chief John Wood is no longer with the department.

CBS 8 reached out to San Diego Fire Rescue after reports surfaced that Wood had suddenly left his position.

According to Munoz, "John Wood was with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department since 1996, and most recently held the position of Assistant Chief assigned to lead SDFD’s Business Operations, which included the Emergency Command & Data Center, Logistics, Employee Services, and Community Risk Reduction. John Wood is no longer employed with the City as of Sept. 27, 2024. City policy prevents SDFD from releasing any other details."

Wood was part of the San Diego Fire Rescue's Urban Search and Rescue Team to go to New York City on September 11th, 2001 to assist with rescue efforts after the terrorist attacks. We recently interviewed Wood as we looked back on the tragic anniversary of the event.

CBS 8 reached out to John Wood for comment, but he has not responded.

Just a month ago Robert Logan was sworn in as the new fire chief for San Diego Fire Rescue after 24 years with the department.

Munoz said two other longtime assistant chiefs, Jim Gaboury and Dan Eddy, were recently promoted.
