SAN DIEGO — A second Better Buzz has voted to unionize.
Workers in Mira Mesa won their union election on Monday, less than a month after the popular coffee chain's flagship Hillcrest shop did the same.
Employees are organizing under the name Better Buzz United and have joined with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135. They are advocating for better workplace conditions, including better wages, benefits, scheduling and workplace safety.
In a statement on behalf of the union, organizers called the election a "significant step forward for the employees."
"The success at Mira Mesa and Hillcrest is part of a broader movement to improve conditions for all company employees as Better Buzz Coffee continues its rapid expansion across Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada," the statement said.
Employees began the process in April. Better Buzz has more than 20 locations in Southern California and beyond. It's expanding across Southern California, Arizona and Nevada.
"It's a shame that a company boasting about its rapid expansion and plans to further grow continues to neglect the workers who are the lifeblood of their business," UFCW Local 135 Organizing Director Maribel Mckinze said in the statement. "The employees at Better Buzz Mira Mesa have shown the strength workers have when they unite to fight for what they have rightfully earned. While the company has its plans for expansion, so does the union."
