ENCINITAS, Calif. — A bicyclist died Sunday night along the 2700 block of S. Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas.

Sheriff's deputies found the 48-year-old man and his bicycle in the northbound bike lane part of the road a little after 12 a.m. Deputies and paramedics tried life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene from his injuries.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating the cause of the accident. Officials do not know whether alcohol or drugs played a role. There was no sign of a collision with a vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The department is withholding the man's name until his next of kin can be notified. Deputies believe he is an Encinitas resident.

Deputies encourage anyone with information related to the collision to call the North Coastal Sheriff's Station Traffic Division at 760-966-3500.

Last year, the Encinitas City Council declared a local emergency for bikes, e-bikes and other motorized mobility devices. Accidents on e-bikes and bicycles had more than doubled every year since 2020, CBS previously reported.

In September, Encinitas received $3 million to improve safety for bikers, pedestrians and drivers. The project was expected to create a half-mile corridor that would include a protected bike lane.
