JewBelong | Billboards targeting antisemitism on college campuses seen around San Diego

People seeing the messages have mixed reactions on the bright, bold signs.

SAN DIEGO — The signs are big, pink and have messages aimed at the college crowd. One on University Avenue reads, “Remember when college was for losing your virginity, not your mind?”

A non-profit group called JewBelong put up the signs hoping to get the conversation started on fighting antisemitism on college campuses.

“They really are meant for everybody, for nothing more than raise awareness," Archie Gottesman, JewBelong co-founder said.

Raising awareness of antisemitism, according to the Anti-Defamation league, has increased nationwide and on college campuses since the October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel.

“Nothing in this country really changes until people are aware of it and there’s way too many people that don’t realize that it’s scary to be Jewish now, said Gottesman.

According to the FBI hate crimes across the country increased over the last year and at least one business owner says if a billboard gets people talking that’s not a bad idea.

"I think it’s a good thing hopefully it reflects positives on the community," Anthony Lovio, Blind Speed said.

But the one billboard with the message for the 18 and older crowd is causing a few people to shake their heads.

"I think it’s inappropriate. Not Judaism or anything. I just think having that there that’s the wrong message personally," Seth (who did not want to give his last name) said.

“I would think a little girl might be, what does that mean?”

The billboard is across from the Kroc Center where many kids can be seen. CBS 8 asked what they hope people's reactions would be?

“When people see the billboard we want it to start conversations," said Gottesman.

“It’s really people who we call in the mushy middle. It’ people who don’t realize, it’s not part of their daily life or even know the antisemitism is taking place or getting bigger.”

Another billboard on El Cajon Boulevard reads, “Dear colleges, American kids are afraid. Do your job!”

The billboards are showing up across the country and although it’s not digital coming across your smart phone, it’s reaching an audience and generating discussion.

Billboard can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars per month depending on its location and how long its up for. JewBelong plans to have these two billboards up in San Diego County until Dec. 1.
