Body discovered near Mission Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard says a 'good samaritan' found a body near Mission Bay.

SAN DIEGO — A "good samaritan vessel" discovered a body near Mission Bay, according to United States Coast Guard Public Affairs Officer, Alex Gray.

Around 11:30 am on Monday, a coast guard boat on routine patrol located about five nautical miles off Mission Bay discovered a life vest, said Gray. Then, a fishing boat crew discovered another life vest with a body in the area and called 911.

A jay hawk helicopter is searching the area, along with San Diego lifeguards in the water.

As of Monday afternoon, there are no reports of any missing boats.

"There's no sign of a boat or a distress call," said a representative from the Coast Guard.

The medical examiner arrived on scene a little after 3 p.m. According to the Coast Guard, the San Diego County Coroner's Office has the body and is working on identifying the victim. The coroner plans to perform an autopsy.

This is a developing story. Check back for additional updates.
