SAN DIEGO — An unattended metal box found outside the San Diego Central Courthouse on Tuesday prompted a road closure with several agencies responding. The San Diego Sheriff's Department was notified of the item located at the southeast corner of the courthouse on Union Street just before noon.
A sheriff's lieutenant said the box turned out to be harmless.
The box was near the intersection of Union and B streets on a courthouse retaining wall. The area was secured and a bomb arson response was requested, according to sheriffs.
Courthouse access was affected and court proceedings delayed for a short time during the incident.
San Diego Fire Department's Metro Arson Strike Team determined the container did not contain any explosive or hazardous materials, and the area was deemed safe.
The container was impounded by deputies and the investigation is ongoing, according to the agency.
San Diego Police reopened traffic lanes in the area after the all-clear.
