What is the mystery burning smell in San Diego?

Residents across the county reported a smell like "burning plastic or chemicals" in the air on Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO — Residents across San Diego reported a strange smell in the air on Tuesday morning.  People turned to social media to report where they are smelling it and what it smells like.

On a Reddit post, people from several neighborhoods in the county report a smell like "burning plastic or chemicals" in La Mesa, Santee, Pacific Beach, Hillcrest and as far north in Escondido.

On Twitter, similar questions were being asked about the "plastic/electrical/chemical burning smell" across San Diego.

Mónica Muñoz with San Diego Fire-Rescue said that they received a few calls from around the city and have not been able to confirm where it is coming from or what it might be.

The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District said it received several calls and sent agents into the field but haven't been able to find a source. Their monitoring team says the air quality numbers haven't changed.

CBS 8 also reached out to the City of San Diego, San Diego County, California Air Resource Board, Navy and Marines.

Here at CBS 8, we aren’t sure what the smell is, but we will continue to investigate and see what we can find out. We will update this story as new information becomes available.
