SAN DIEGO — The vice-chair of the California Republican Party said security is extremely tight at this year's Republican National Convention, and she feels safe.
Corrin Rankin flew into Milwaukee Sunday morning.
"I'm hearing the downtown area is completely secured," said Rankin. "California has sent law enforcement to Milwaukee. There's law enforcement walking around our hotel, so I feel very safe."
She is among the 50,000 people expected at this year's convention. Former President Donald Trump arrived Sunday, one day after he was shot.
Rankin said she found out about the assassination attempt while she was at the airport in Sacramento on Saturday.
"I was waiting [on] my flight, It was completely quiet in the airport, I got a call from a friend. She just started screaming, 'Oh my gosh! Trump's been shot! Trump's been shot!' She didn't give me any context. I did my best to remain calm because the airport was so silent," said Rankin. "I just kept saying 'Finish your sentence. Tell what happened. What's the end result?' She slowed down and talked me through it over the phone. I was just in shock. I was speechless."
Rankin said she expects to hear a message of unity at this year's convention.
Monday, the former president announced JD Vance as his pick for Vice President.
Former President Trump is scheduled to give a speech to delegates Thursday.
