Beep beep | New CA bill requires new cars alert its speeding driver

New cars manufactured or sold in California by 2032 would be required to have the technology.

SAN DIEGO — California could become the first state where new cars would be required to alert drivers when they're breaking the speed limit.

Senate Bill 961 would require cars to start beeping when they exceed the speed limit by at least ten miles per hour.

CA SB 961

The cars would use GPS to compare vehicle speed with posted speed limits and beep to notify drivers when they're going too fast. New cars manufactured or sold in California by 2032 would be required to have the technology.

CBS 8 spoke with Lyft driver Pat about the proposed bill. "I drive out and I do 300 miles a day and the most aggressive drivers are in California, Los Angeles, San Diego on the freeways," Pat said.

Lawmakers who support the bill believe it will make the roads a safer place and help reduce crashes.

Pat agrees. "Something I think when they're driving they just lose track of how fast they're going and it would be a lot safer out there," Pat said. "The accidents. I just drove down from Orange County and it's crazy."

The National Transportation Safety Board supports the bill. In a letter, the board's chair says speeding increases the chances of being in a crash along with the severity. Since 2012, the board has recommended that drivers, at minimum, are warned when exceeding the speed limit.

The European Union is already on board. Countries in Europe will require the new technology in all new cars sold there later this year.

Meanwhile, some people like local driver Patrick say the bill goes too far.

"What if you go a little bit faster every once in a while plus I think it would be distracting to be beeping at you while you're driving," Patrick said.

The bill passed its first vote in the Senate Tuesday and is now going to the Assembly.
