SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California is the next state to allow residents to carry a digital driver’s license or state ID in their iPhone Wallet or Google Wallet app.

The new digital ID option will give California residents the ability to securely and conveniently present their iPhone, Apple Watch or Android phone at TSA checkpoints and businesses.

“We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to provide convenient, private and secure driver’s licenses and ID cards directly on people’s phones. This is a big step in our efforts to better serve all Californians, meeting people where they’re at and with technology people use every day," said Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The California DMV began a pilot program in 2023. To date, more than 500,000 Californians have added a mobile driver's license to their phone through the DMV Wallet app.

Californians will still have to carry a physical state ID or driver's license. The state says the mobile version is a more convenient option to validate age and identity at airports and businesses.
