Candlelight vigil held for dentist who was shot and killed in El Cajon

28-year-old Doctor Benjamin Harouni was shot and killed at Smile Plus Dentistry last Thursday.

The community is mourning the loss of a dentist who was shot and killed in El Cajon last week. A candlelight vigil was held Sunday in honor of 28-year-old, Doctor Benjamin Harouni.

He is being remembered for all he brought to this world and the bright light his legacy is leaving behind.

"Benjamin's life was a shining star," says Harouni's brother, Jacob.

"There's no way Ben would leave this world without leaving a legacy. Ben, I want you to know that we all love and miss you," Jacob said.

Benjamin worked as a dentist at Smile Plus Dentistry alongside his father who owned the practice.

On Thursday police say Mohammed Adbulkareem opened fire inside the office and three people were shot including Benjamin who was killed by the gunfire.

"Does a Muslim boy deserve this? Does a Christian boy deserve this? Nobody deserves this, no family. Enough is enough," said Benjamin's uncle.

They're an Iranian Jewish family. This tragedy has rocked the entire San Diego Jewish community.

El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells spoke at the vigil and said he's aware antisemitism is skyrocketing. He says the FBI and police are investigating whether this act of violence was a hate crime.

"I want to promise you that you're not alone and there are a lot of us who will not let this stand on our watch. Again I stand with you," Wells said.

Despite the tragedy, Benjamin's brother says his memory will live on.

"Even an act of hate couldn't dim that light and if anything has made it shine even brighter," he said.

The family is also putting together a fund to continue Benjamin’s legacy, called “Humans Against Hate.”
