Car drives off Carlsbad cliff after evading police

The driver is said to have significant injuries and was treated by Carlsbad Fire before they were transported to the hospital.

CARLSBAD, Calif β€” A car went over a cliff in Carlsbad Monday afternoon, prompting road closures in the area.

According to Carlsbad Police, an officer witnessed a car crash into the fence of the city's Fleet Maintenance Department on the 2400 block of Impala Drive just after 4 p.m. The driver fled the scene "recklessly," a spokesperson with the department said.

Police started a pursuit after the car, but cancelled it due to safety concerns, officials say.

Shortly after, officers say they saw the same car accelerate "at a high rate of speed" and drove off the cliff along the 5500 block of Carlsbad Boulevard. The car landed on the beach.

Carlsbad Police officers went down the cliff on foot to provide lifesaving measures, officials say.

The driver is said to have significant injuries and was treated by Carlsbad Fire before they were transported to the hospital.

The driver is expected to survive, police say.

Officials say the cause of the incident remains under investigation, but alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time.
