Car crash sparks chain reaction leaving nearby apartments flooded

Several people, including five kids, are displaced after water gushed into their apartment homes.

SAN DIEGO — A Mira Mesa woman took CBS 8 inside her apartment home, after water from nearby fire hydrant gushed inside and flooded it.

A car crashed into the fire hydrant near the corner of Maya Linda Road and Gold Coast Drive, just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Rosalie Tatuin and 11 neighbors, including five children, woke up to the surprise of water at their doors.

"I heard like a bang," Rosalie explained. "...Most of the time I hear some brakes or something, and then after two minutes like a shower..."

But it wasn't a storm. San Diego Fire Department officials say the crash sent one of the cars straight toward a fire hydrant, knocking it down. That left water gushing into the air, down an embankment, and into the apartments below.

"We had a significant amount of fire runoff that was running directly into an apartment building," SDFD Captain Tony Tyquiengco said. "That affected three apartments units."

Captain Tyquiengco says his crews shut off the water within five minutes of getting to the scene, but the damage was done. Tatuin tells us the water made it up to her calves at one point, as evidenced by a water line on the fence around her patio.

Fire officials say they worked with the apartment complex management to get water restoration companies and the Red Cross on the property as soon as possible. Neither of the drivers were hurt.
