Serra Mesa 'castle' home captures the community’s attention

A home in Serra Mesa appears to look like a medieval castle, it's a rare sight for people in the area.

SAN DIEGO — In a quiet neighborhood in Serra Mesa, there’s an eye-catching sight. A building with flags, dragons, and brick walls.

“Wow! That’s the only thing I can say is wow there’s a castle in the middle of Serra Mesa,” Serra Mesa Resident Cris Floyd said.

At the moment, this unique building on Raejean Avenue is still undergoing construction. But already, the exterior of the home is capturing the attention of people living in this neighborhood for appearing to look like a castle.

“One of my dreams has always been to live in a castle so I see one around the corner and I’m like that’s freakin 'cool,” Serra Mesa Resident Dominik Floyd said.

Cris Floyd and his nephew Dominic Floyd have lived in this neighborhood for years, they’ve seen the process of this magnificent project.

“This is actually two houses that’s converted into a castle,” Cris said.

A man who said he was the owner of the building was heading out Monday afternoon but was not ready to speak about his home. Neighbors told CBS 8 that the idea behind the project has a deeper meaning.

“Originally the story was that he wanted to be closer to his mom so his mom lived in the other house and he lived in this one. So he wanted to connect rather than walk from front door to front door,” Dominic said.

When construction began a few years ago, neighbors tell me they never imagined something like this would be built.

“Personally I think it’s a super cool building. I know some people arent a big fan of taking up all the space in the castle thing but I think it’s really cool to be honest,” Dominic said.

While some people living in this neighborhood have seen a sneak peak. Cris told CBS 8 that a neighbor is keeping details a mystery of what the inside looks like.

“She’s seen part of the inside and didn’t want to unveil anything so that was a little disappointing because I really wanted to see the inside,” Cris said.

While the project is still under construction, people are looking forward to seeing the final look.

“It's got to be soon ready for the unveiling, I’m excited to see it, I can't wait,” Cris said.

For now, neighbors get to enjoy the building process of a castle in the middle of Serra Mesa.
