SAN DIEGO — Holiday travel is in full swing and it's the time of year when we usually start to see longer wait times at the border. At the same time, the busiest travel day this week is supposed to be the day before Thanksgiving.
Customs and Border Protection will open southbound traffic at Pedwest to help ease the traffic.
Now Customs and Border Protection announced Saturday that travelers can once again head into Mexico at the PedWest pedestrian crossing at San Ysidro Port of Entry starting Monday.
Traffic into Mexico has been closed at PedWest since April 2020. Northbound traffic re-opened in January to help process an increasing number of asylum seekers.
CBP closed the crossing again in September.
“With the resumption of operations at the Pedestrian West southbound facility, we are taking steps to return to operational capacity and improve the daily life of thousands of travelers in the region who cross every day,” Mariza Marin, Port Director of the San Ysidro Port of Entry said. “CBP will continue to work on enhancing economic and social relations across the border, particularly on the eve of the holiday season.”
With the holiday season here, CBP is making changes to ease the traveling commute for people.
Mariza Marin, who is the port director for the San Ysidro Port of Entry said, "...with the reopening of operations at the pedestrian west-southbound facility…they are taking steps to return to operational capacity to improve the daily life of thousands of travelers who cross every day."
She adds that CBP will continue to work on improving economic and social relations across the border, especially on the eve of the holiday season.
The southbound facility will be open seven days a week from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Northbound traffic will open at 6 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m.
