Celebrations for Día de Los Muertos begin in San Diego

Residents in National City got a preview of Día de Los Muertos festivities at Westfield Plaza Bonita Mall.

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — Festivities for Día de Los Muertos have started in San Diego County, the tradition to honor loved ones who have died. Community members got an early preview Saturday at a Plaza Bonita mall event with face painting, live performances and photo opportunities with catrines y catrina's.

Día de Los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is commemorated November 1-2. The holiday pays tribute to the life of those who are no longer alive.

“Cause we’re never going to forget them, its so special,” attendee Rosa Sanchez said.

Sanchez took part in the Día de Los Muertos activities at Plaza Bonita mall. For Sanchez, this two day celebration means a time to commemorate the loved ones close to her who are no longer here.

"My mom and my grandma and my brother," Sanchez said.

Many people create ofrendas or altars filled with flowers, candles and objects that represent their loved ones.

Día de Los Muertos serves as a time to reflect on their life and legacy. Royal Entertainers staff member Leanna Neely assisted while guests got their face painted in vibrant colors. For Neely, its an exciting opportunity to be able to get others in the spirit ahead of celebrations.

“Remembering and going through stories together and sharing them,” Neely said.

It’s a celebration to bring families together and look back at memories.

"We just get together and we appreciate those that have lost and have a lovely meal," Neely said.

For many families, Día de Los Muertos has been passed on for generations. Sanchez says its important to keep traditions alive to also be remembered.

“We want our family not to forget us either when we pass away,” Sanchez said.
