SAN DIEGO — The remains of a Chinese tourist missing since July in the Anza Borrego desert were found about two and a half miles away from the body of her Navy SEAL companion, according to a death certificate obtained by CBS 8.
The death certificate confirmed the remains of Fang Jin, 47, were located downstream from Harper Canyon. A San Diego County Sheriff’s search and rescue team found Jin’s body on October 28.
Jin’s death certificate lists GPS coordinates of 33°08'02 N 116°11'50 W as the location of her body.
A hiker located the remains of John Fitzpatrick, 52, on September 17 closer to the Harper Canyon trailhead. Fitzpatrick death certificate lists GPS coordinates of 33°7'14.9 N 116°14'27.8 W as the location of his body.
The GPS coordinates for Fitzpatrick’s remains are more specific than the GPS coordinates listed for the location of Jin’s remains. The Navy SEAL’s GPS coordinates are pinpointed down to a decimal location. It’s unclear why the GPS coordinates listed for Jin’s body do not include decimal accuracy.
Even so, the coordinates indicate Jin’s remains were found near or in a desert wash about 2.8 miles downstream from Fitzpatrick’s body.
The cause of death on both death certificates was listed as “pending.” Autopsies in both cases remain sealed at the request of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department because of an ongoing investigation.
Jin flew from China to Los Angeles on July 14 to meet Fitzpatrick after socializing with him on the internet for months. She had been staying with Fitzpatrick at his mobile home park in Morongo Valley when the couple went missing on July 22.
Fitzpatrick's 4-wheel-drive truck was found abandoned several miles away from his remains. San Diego County officials have not released the GPS location of the truck, citing an ongoing investigation.
