Chicano-Con returns to San Diego

Border X Brewing Owner David Favela wants to share his love for comics with others while also embracing the Hispanic culture through Chicano-Con in Barrio Logan.

SAN DIEGO — Border X Brewing is right along Logan Avenue in San Diego, a short walk south of the convention center hosting Comic-Con. It's a local business with food and drinks but once a year it turns into a world of comics for just a few days.

“We’re just a few blocks away. Why wouldn't we be part of Comic-Con? Why don't we create an opportunity to do something different,” Border X Brewing Owner David Favela said.

David started ‘Chicano-Con,’ an event full of comics, cosplay and special guests. Favela’s love for comics started as a young child trying to learn English in school.

“So when I started school in kindergarten, I didn't speak English and there was no bilingual education so I was sent to a special school and I hated it so much I would hide in the library,” Favela said.

In the library David let his imagination explore as he paged through the books and looked at the pictures…he grew a passion for comics and storytelling. “So not only did I get out of the special learning school. By junior high I was reading college-level textbooks because I became a bookworm,” Favela said.

David told CBS 8 that comics set up the foundation for the rest of his life. Favela wants to share the same love for comics with others while also embracing the Hispanic culture through Chicano-Con.

“We want to spark creativity and imagination and give people a chance to do something interesting and then the last thing is bringing together Latino creatives,” Favela said.

Chicano-Con runs through Saturday night, it's a three-day event with live music, free comic books and special guests including cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, and directors Miguel Puga and Jorge Gutiérrez.

“Comic books saved my life and I hope that by giving out comic books and sparking creativity among our youth that it maybe can change theirs,” Favela said.
