Chief Robert Logan takes over as San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's 19th fire chief

Chief Logan said it still feels surreal he's the new chief. He joked when he pulled into the chief's parking spot this morning, he had to pinch himself.

SAN DIEGO — A new era began at the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Monday as Chief Robert Logan took over as the department's 19th fire chief.

According to the department, Chief Logan is the third African-American to hold this position in the department's 134-year history.

"I never was the best student, but I was always the most hardworking person. That hard work paid off," said Chief Logan during an interview with CBS 8 Monday morning.

Chief Logan said it still feels surreal he's the new chief. He joked when he pulled into the chief's parking spot this morning, he had to pinch himself.

He grew up in the Southeastern part of San Diego, across the street from Lincoln High School. He said he was raised by his grandmother, a few doors down from Fire Station 12. He said he would often run to the window to watch the fire trucks go by. He knew from a young age he wanted to be a firefighter.

At one point in his career, Chief Logan worked at Station 12.

"I worked there for approximately three years, it was the best three years of my career. People I grew up with, all their families are elderly now, and it was impactful for them, when I would walk in as part of crew to help them. It made them feel really comfortable, made me feel really happy," he said.

Chief Logan said he's going to be launching a series of events where people can really get to know the fire chiefs and get to know the firefighters in their neighborhood.

He said the department is the strongest it's ever been and prepared to handle a major wildfire.

As for challenges, he said the budget remains the biggest one. He said there are positions the department would like to add, but hasn't had the money for them. For example, the department would like to increase inspections of homes living along canyons.

This November, residents of San Diego will decide on a 1 percent sales tax hike. If approved, it would boost money in the general fund, which potentially could increase the budget for San Diego Fire-Rescue.

"The citizens will have a chance to speak in November," said Chief Logan. "I'm looking forward to the results of that."
