CHULA VISTA, Calif. — City leaders in Chula Vista are asking residents to consider renewing some of its sales tax funding for infrastructure projects.
On Tuesday, the Chula Vista City Council voted to put Measure P on the November ballot.
The half-cent sales tax went into effect in 2017 and was set to end in 2027. Now, it could be renewed.
"It has been great for the city," said Stephen Stenberg, a Chula Vista resident.
Stenberg has lived in Chula Vista for decades. He says the tax has been a huge benefit for the city.
"Streets gets redone all the time, sidewalks crumble, old buildings go, rec centers go , they need new police cars and fire engines, public safety. Everything that has to do with the infrastructure of the city is covered under Measure P," he said.
Meanwhile some citizens voiced opposition to the tax.
"You go buy a loaf of bread and it's double the price from a couple years ago. The milk. What are parents doing?," said a woman during public comment.
Measure P has raised more than $190 million to fund infrastructure projects throughout the city. This includes upgrading fire and police departments, first responder vehicles, repairing streets, sidewalks and other maintenance.
"We're able to stay on top of storm drain maintenance. Our system was able to handle the barrage of water that came with the storms this year. Our other neighboring cities aren't able to say the same thing," Victor said.
The city says renewing the tax would allow these projects to continue to be funded.
