CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Chula Vista held its annual Chula Vista Champions celebration on Saturday. The event recognizes nominees who excelled in community service, academics, arts, and sports.
Over 200 individuals and groups were celebrated on Saturday. One of the recipients was Tauya Nenguke, a Chick-fil-A employee who ran to the parking lot and performed CPR on a customer who was undergoing medical trouble. Nenguke ran down what happened that day, “I noticed across the parking lot a gentleman having a cardiac arrest episode and his friend was attempting to help him out but having CPR training I jumped in to help this gentleman and help save his life.”
Some others who were recognized included Sandra Scheller, an advocate for Holocaust survivors. Scheller told News 8, “I was born out of the ashes of the Holocaust. My mother and father were survivors my father fled Austria and my mom was in three camps.”
Scheller has said her mission is to remind people of the horrific acts of the Holocaust and the repercussions for families that followed.
Each champion was awarded a medal on stage. 2020 was the fourth year the City of Chula Vista has honored its champions.
