Chula Vista hosts community workshop on Bayfront development

On Monday night Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego laid out their plans to add two parks alongside the Bayfront.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The City of Chula Vista on Monday revealed the latest plans to revitalize its bayfront as it hosted a community workshop for residents to have a closer look and give their feedback.

On Monday night Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego laid out their plans to add two parks alongside the Bayfront.

Included in the City of Chula Vista and Port of San Diego plans are tow parks alongside the bayfront. The Sweetwater Park will be designed to be nature based with bike paths and picnic areas.

A separate area called Harbor park was pitched as a more active and vibrant waterfront with large beach, play areas, and a café.

Monday’s workshop was the third of its kind in which the public was able to raise questions and their concerns about the project.

Joanna Garret is an avid kayaker and spoke up about the proposed boat launch.

“My concern is the boat launch is not accessible to those who have kayaks or paddle boarders or windsurfers. The parking lot is too far away. Kayaks can be up to 100 pounds,” she said.

Harbor and Sweetwater parks are only part of a more than 500-acre master plan to develop Chula Vistas Bayfront, which will also include a proposed Gaylord Pacific Resort Hotel and Convention Center, and hundreds of condominiums, homes and shopping areas.

City officials said they are taking more than 1,800 comments into account as they take the next steps to make these visions a realty.

“I actually was skeptical, and I was pleasantly surprised,” said a resident.
