Chula Vista I-5 wrong-way crash leaves 16-year-old, 67-year-old dead

The crash was reported around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning killing 2 and causing massive traffic delays on southbound I-5 during the morning commute.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Two drivers were killed Wednesday in a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5 just north of Palomar Street in Chula Vista, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to CHP, at approximately 3:23 a.m. a 67-year-old San Diego woman was driving northbound on I-5 South before colliding near Palomar Street with a 16-year-old teenage boy from Imperial Beach. After the crash, both cars became fully engulfed. Both drivers were trapped in their cars and died at the scene.

All lanes of I-5 South, north of J Street, were closed to facilitate the investigation.

"A toxicology report is pending through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if alcohol/and or drugs were a factor," CHP said.
